Maersk vs MSC: the operational differences that matter to freight forwarders

The two largest container carriers run different portals, alliance structures, and documentation rules. Here is how Maersk and MSC compare across the workflows a forwarder ops desk touches every week, and where each exposes more of the routine work to automation.

Shipping instructions

Both carriers accept shipping instructions through a web portal, but the submission experience differs. Maersk submits on Maersk.com, one of the most mature carrier portals in the industry, with a correspondingly strict validation layer. HS code formatting, party-detail consistency across the shipper, consignee, and notify blocks, and VGM reconciliation against the booked weight all get checked at first pass. A submission that would clear a younger portal and get corrected downstream tends to bounce on Maersk upfront.

MSC submits on myMSC. The portal is functional, but MSC's operator-facing maturity trails the carrier's back-end API capability. myMSC still carries legacy behavior: character encoding rejections (accented and special characters such as ç, %, and ½ are rejected per MSC's own Brazil advisory), email-based amendment requests silently ignored in some geographies, and no published service-level target for draft BL delivery.

Bill of lading

Maersk handles switch BL requests and draft BL review against the SI, with amendment routing and telex release. MSC's distinctive trap is the irrevocable BL type choice. MSC's US Terms and Conditions lock the choice between Original BL and Sea Waybill at booking, and the only way to change it afterward is cancellation and rebooking. Costa Rica adds a further constraint, since Costa Rican customs does not accept telex release, eBL, or Sea Waybill, so an Original BL has to be planned at booking rather than caught at the documentation stage.

MSC's fee schedule rewards channel discipline: amendments through myMSC or EDI before sailing are free, while email, phone, and post-sailing changes carry per-BL fees. MSC's US Terms and Conditions also state that MSC is not obligated to produce a draft BL for customer confirmation, a gap versus carriers that publish turnaround targets.

Booking

Maersk booking runs across the Gemini Cooperation network it operates with Hapag-Lloyd, which launched in February 2025 after the former 2M partnership with MSC ended. Gemini's hub-and-spoke routing puts more transshipment legs in a typical journey, which flows downstream into tracking and amendment windows.

MSC's headline booking product is Instant Quote, a quoting and booking tool on myMSC that returns rates and transit times in seconds. It is a quoting and booking tool rather than a committed-space product, so a booking desk calibrates ETA promise ranges rather than relying on a fixed loading commitment. MSC also runs two cooperations a booking desk has to track: a slot exchange with the Premier Alliance (ONE, HMM, Yang Ming) covering nine Asia-Europe services, and a vessel service agreement with ZIM. Either can put an MSC booking on partner tonnage without the confirmation surfacing the routing difference.

Documentation

The advance-filing workload has the same shape on both carriers: VGM submission, dangerous goods declarations, and advance manifest filings across AMS, ACI, and ICS2, plus pre-alerts and arrival notices. What differs is the carrier-specific formatting and the legacy reference conventions, heaviest on Maersk because of its three operating codes.

Which exposes more automatable surface, and why

The practical automation question is where the repetitive work sits. On MSC, more of it sits on the portal surface. MSC's DCSA Track and Trace API works cleanly once a forwarder is integrated, but onboarding to it requires submission of a Direct Integration Request Form rather than self-serve sign-up, and myMSC's operator-facing maturity trails that back-end API. So the day-to-day work (SI character sanitization, BL type lock enforcement at booking, and amendment routing to the fee-free portal channel) happens on a browser surface an agent can operate end to end.

Maersk concentrates the automatable work earlier. Maersk.com is mature and well-documented, so the leverage is in getting a first-pass submission clean: HS code and party-detail validation, VGM reconciliation, and legacy reference mapping across the MAEU, MSKU, and SEAU codes before the portal's strict validation layer rejects it. Both carriers expose ample routine work to automation. They differ in where that work concentrates, which reflects onboarding and portal maturity rather than a ranking of the two carriers.

How Expedion handles both Maersk and MSC

Expedion runs the same five operational workflows on both carriers. Your system of record stays intact: agents connect via API where available and authenticated browser sessions where not, and your reviewer approves before anything is submitted.

Booking

Booking creation and amendment on both carriers, across Maersk's Gemini schedules and MSC's Instant Quote, with Premier slot-exchange and ZIM awareness on MSC.

SI preparation, validation, and submission on Maersk.com and myMSC, with HS code validation, VGM reconciliation, and MSC character sanitization for non-ASCII markets.

Bill of lading

Draft BL review against the SI, BL type lock enforcement on MSC, amendment routing through the fee-free portal channel, and telex release coordination.

Documentation

Frequently asked questions

What is the main operational difference between Maersk and MSC for freight forwarders?

Maersk operates within the Gemini Cooperation with Hapag-Lloyd, whose hub-and-spoke routing adds transshipment legs; MSC runs a standalone network since the 2M dissolution in January 2025. The sharper desk-level differences are MSC's irrevocable BL type choice at booking and its portal quirks versus Maersk's mature, strict Maersk.com portal.

Do Maersk and MSC use the same DCSA tracking standard?

Both expose a DCSA Track and Trace v2.2 feed, and dcsa.org lists both as having implemented Track and Trace 2.2. The difference is onboarding: MSC's Track and Trace API onboarding requires submission of a Direct Integration Request Form rather than self-serve sign-up.

Can Expedion automate both Maersk and MSC from one setup?

Yes. Expedion runs the same five workflows (booking, shipping instructions, bill of lading, documentation, and tracking) on both carriers. Your TMS stays intact, agents connect via API or authenticated browser sessions, and your reviewer approves before submission.
