Reefer Container

A reefer carries perishable and temperature-sensitive cargo, from produce to pharmaceuticals to frozen goods, and runs on power for the whole journey: the vessel's reefer plugs at sea, powered racks at the terminal, and a clip-on generator set, a genset, when it moves by road or rail away from a power source. On the desk a reefer booking carries steps a dry box does not, since the set-point temperature and any ventilation settings travel on the booking, the equipment is confirmed early because reefer slots are limited, and the cold chain is watched against the carrier's reefer readings. It differs from a dry container, the standard box for general cargo, and from out-of-gauge equipment, which concerns cargo that exceeds standard dimensions rather than temperature control. The decision it drives is whether the cargo needs an active set-point held unbroken from origin to destination, and who monitors it along the way.
