Unlike RPA, which executes fixed rule-based scripts and breaks when the process changes, agentic AI reasons toward an objective rather than replaying steps; and where a chatbot or assistant responds to prompts and returns answers, an agentic system acts toward a goal across multiple steps with limited human supervision. Agentic AI is the broader paradigm or property, whereas an AI agent is the concrete software system that exhibits it, so the two are paradigm and instance rather than synonyms. Gartner uses the term agent washing for the rebranding of existing products, such as AI assistants, RPA, and chatbots, as agentic without substantial agentic capability, which buyers should treat as a claim to verify against real autonomy.
