A TMS is the desk system that handles the shipment lifecycle, from rating and booking through tracking, delivery confirmation, and reconciliation with carriers. Shippers, freight forwarders, and third-party logistics providers all run a TMS, so the term spans both the company sending goods and the intermediary arranging the move. A freight management system (FMS) is a TMS built specifically for freight forwarders, and for forwarders the two terms are often used interchangeably.
