The HS code drives the duty rate, any import or export controls, and whether a commodity trips a separate regime such as dangerous goods. A wrong code surfaces as a customs hold or a penalty rather than at booking, so it is validated against the actual commodity at the shipping-instruction stage.

HS Code
The Harmonized System code, an international product-classification number maintained by the World Customs Organization and used to assess duties, apply restrictions, and compile trade statistics. The first six digits are global, and countries extend it for their own tariffs.
